5 random things that make my life better and/or more fun (part 2)
Let's have some random fun with some random thoughts
It's been about two weeks since my last post and the perfectionist in me hates not being consistent but your girl was on vacation! (and I haven’t done a subscription yet - actually let me know in the comments what you actually pay for on substack because I feel like we all don’t pay for THAT many newsletters).
So let’s kick it off with the first things I either see in my house or think of in my head.
A bamboo rotating pen holder like this
I got this as a Christmas present filled with all kinds of markers and watercolor pens and I’ve filled this thing to the brim. It is a little circle of fun that for me represents doodles, creativity, and honestly abundance. When I see it, I want to just draw and be a kid! With each year that passes I feel like we need little things to feed our inner child and bring pure fun. Coloring and doodling is that! And if you’re on a zoom with me - chances are I’m doing just that in order to listen to what is going on.
Using your compass on your phone
Yes you have one. I studied Feng Shui for a year and alway used it when making measurements to calculate flying stars in homes and understand where light would be in a home all the time. But until I took that class I wasn’t always thinking about North, South, East, West during my days. During my study with my teacher, it became something that altered me to my core. I love orienting myself physically in the world. It does something to my brain and my health to know where my body points, where the sun is rising tomorrow, and where I could go if I just went straight. As someone that struggles with interoception at times, knowing where I am on this planet does something to us. It’s such a natural thing that we can easily be disoriented when we live in cities.
A everything closet
In our basement I have a closet that is filled and organized with little bins organized of all the random things that I could never figure out where they needed to live. So they just live there. The things that are not aesthetic and not needed everyday. They are labeled on the outside with my household love, a label maker. I have items for clothing maintenance like combs for my sweaters, de-pill etc. They all live in a box in the everything closet under “Clothing Maintenance.” I keep all the little samples from airplanes and Sephora for when I travel so I throw them all in a box in the everything box that I’ll go grab what I need for a short trip to the city. It doesn’t need to crowd my bathroom so it goes in the everything closet. I have a box of the face mask that I stock up on when I’m in Japan and Singapore, box of all the buttons that come with jackets or sweater we have that I don’t want to lose. I have a box of batteries. A box with all of my wires labeled from random electronics so I stop losing them or never finding them. I needed this closet of organization for my brain.
As an ADHDer I need to know I can rely on another place to just be for the places that don’t really have a logical place. It’s not that attractive but it is attractive to my brain.
An “altar”
Not like a religious one but a corner of your creation! I feel like a magpie creating a little nest of treasures, but I have this beautiful copper tray that was my great grandmothers that is my little altar of happiness. It’s got feathers that I find on my walks, some beautiful crystals, little Totoro creatures (favorite childhood movie), my daily jewelry, collection of little Chinese fortune cookie fortunes, and more. We used to have our lockers or our cubbies and we now have our apartments, but I do love the idea of an even more special place where we have things that we can see and enjoy each day - not locked away in a treasure box.
GHD Universal Voltage Soft Curl Curling Iron
I’ve been traveling a lot to different time zones and I wish I knew this existed before. The GHD curling iron I got this past year has been the reason I can go in an out of any situation and have great hair. It’s got universal voltage and light! The cord effortless swivels around and I spent a good amount of time figuring out how to do my hair with it but it’s worth it! It was my goal this year to learn how to do my hair better because I can’t keep paying people when I want it to look nice because it always falls in a few hours and it will never be the same person who does it - so why not I eliminate the risk and learn to do it myself!
Soon I’ll have some more Big Brain thoughts but sometimes I sort of think my way out of writing because it doesn’t feel worth it for Substack. But this is a fun place!

I love the everything closet idea!
I just ordered one of these storage containers (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078R8P6KR?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1) for all my random cords and chargers. I labeled each smaller container so now I can find any USB->Lightning or USB->USB-C cords quickly!
Pairing this with some magnetic cable ties (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FD57X6W?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title) to keep what was previously a tangled mess organized made my ADHD brain very happy!!
